Representative Cynthia Thielen (Kailua, Kaneohe Bay) delivered the Hawaiian “Word of the Day” during floor session of the Hawaii House of Representatives.

“The Hawaiian word for today is hoʻoulu which means to grow, sprout, propagate, and to increase.  It is said that the primary goal of King Kalakaua was ho’oulu lahui, to increase and preserve the nation.  Used in a sentence,  pule ho‘oulu ‘āina means a prayer for the increased productivity of the land….which, by the way, can be achieved through growing olonā which is the Hawaiian word for hemp!”
